Scenes from: An Affair to Remember
A Beau Dommage medley is playing. This Franco-pop-folk music, rich in vocal harmonies, is as distinctive to Montreal as Edith Piaf is to Paris.
FADE IN:
It's a spectacular Spring day. Ginette and Harry driving in a red convertible, top down through the winding road hugging the craggy grey cliffs of Mount Royal overlooking Montreal set against the Laurentian mountain range. They're laughing, hair blowing in the wind. All is right, all is beautiful. Basking in the glory of youth in love.
DISSOLVE TO:
Sunday-in-the-park, a Monet tableau. Ginette and Harry are walking hand-in-hand around Beaver Lake on top of Mount Royal. A Monet tableau. Ginette feeds a small flock of quacking white ducks a hunk of bread. Harry rip-offs a piece to feed the ducks, but recoils and drops the bread, as a cheeky duck nearly snaps off his fingers. Harry freezes for a beat while Ginette laughs hysterically. Another beat. Ginette spontaneously grabs Harry and plants a passionate kiss on his mouth.
DISSOLVE TO:
Ginette and Harry sipping white wine on the outdoor terrace of the cafe on top of Beaver Lake of Mount Royal. De rigueur for young lovers intoxicated from the ambiance of their first Sunday-in-the-park. They do a running commentary on the park strollers, as if those people only exist to entertain the couple. Harry points to an eccentric couple wearing ridiculous hats walking a ferret on a leash. The ferret climbs up the woman's leg and starts humping it. Harry and Ginette keel over in laughter and tumble into a passionate embrace.
DISSOLVE TO:
Silhouettes of Ginette and Harry watching the sunset over Montreal from the look-out on Mount Royal. The sky glows a mixed hue of hot pink and tangerine. They kiss just as the scarlett sun sets on the city. As if on cue, an even sprinkling of city lights flick on over the grid of the cityscape.
DISSOLVE TO:
Tete-a-tete in a cozy restaurant on the Plateau, at a table by the window. The waiter brings them an impressive tray of fresh sea food, including a giant live lobster that almost snaps off Harry's pointing finger as if to say, "Not me,boychik!"
DISSOLVE TO:
Ginette and Harry charge up the outside winding staircase of a brownstone triples, into her apartment. Both are so excited that Ginette can barely get the key into the lock. When it finally opens, they swirl together, peeling off their clothes in a tornado of lust, groping their way to the bedroom, but not quite making it. The floor will have to do. Ginette claps her hands; the lights go off. Sweet giggles melt into oohs and ahs.
FADE OUT:
THE SCREEN GOES BLACK FOR A BEAT.
SFX: (LOUDLY, ABRUPTLY) THE SOUND OF A SCRATCHED VINYL RECORD.
