My "new" mag discovery

I admit, I'm way behind the times on this one. Been a devout reader of Vanity Fair and a lot of others in between. recently picked up a copy of Wired and vow never to miss an issue from now on. I always thought it was a techie mag, but I was way off.

Most comfortable place on a plane...

is actually in the back kitchen where its a bit drafty, but the only plcae you can breath. from the emergency doors. Good place to stretch, to grab a drink and to stretch. Of course it doesn't seem to be totally acceptable and today was the first time I got tossed from there. When \i went back to my seat, I realized how stuffy the whole plane was. And if you've got the window seat, it's not only uncomfortable, but claustrophobic.

More on Broom of the System

Something else about David Foster Wallace I like: He does this thing with punctuation to indicate a non-verbal response within a conversation, like a shrug, a look or a nod.

This is it:

"...."

Four dots and quotation marks. Brilliant. It's more reflective of a true conversation where not every line gets a verbal response. Furthermore, I also found myself visualizing the conversation and getting a much more complete story experience.

The most elegant contribution in modern times to literature that I can think of. All I can say is,

"...."

The Broom of the System

Starting to see the payoff of sticking thru some of the wonky parts. 250 pages into novel, it becomes a hot Garpish read. Love the names: Rick Vigorous from the publishing house, Frequent & Vigorous, Stonecipher Beadman, The Antichrist, Wang-Dang Lang. Story within a story about a girl who had a toad living inside her neck. An escaped granny on the lam from her old aged home...Funny, but I wonder if it's all too much over-the-top.

The thing is, it comes together through a coincidental meeting years after we meet the main characters. Does that make it too contrived?

  3. Authors On Tour - The best writers reading live from the iconic Tattered Cover bookstore in Denver. This week - Michael Chabon.
  4. Bloomberg on the Economy - Spend 20 minutes every week with a who's who from the world of finance and the discussion is always lively and fresh.
  5. Shrink Rap - An exploration of the mind. Stuff like Lucid Dreaming is mind-blowing.

Kindle in Canada...Finally

Mixed feelings about the Kindle.

What I like: Portable, more readable at night, in bed w/back lit screen, books easy to download & cheaper than real books.

What I don't like: building my library, still have at least a 2 year backlog of books to read on shelves.

David Foster Wallace excerpt

From The Broom of the System

"...Modern party-dancing is simply writhing to suggestive music. it is ridiculous, silly to watch and excruciatingly embarrassing to perform. It is ridiculous, and yet absolutely everyone does it, so that it is the person who does not want to do the ridiculous thing who feels out of place and uncomfortable and self-conscious...in a word, ridiculous. Right out of Kafka: the person who does not want to do the ridiculous thing is the person who is ridiculous...Modern party-dance is an evil thing."

DAVE’S LOUNGE #175

So I fell behind in just about every facet of my life after my recent trip to Philadelphia — which was not only a great time, but also a bit of a learning experience about life in an old city. My friends and I did a lot of walking that weekend, even though it was rainy and cold out, because everything was close by, and driving anywhere was expensive and inconvenient.

People live and work and play in cities like that all over the world. There’s a certain romance to that. It makes me wish I didn’t live in a sprawling town where car ownership is a practical requirement…
