Novel First Lines

I was eight years old before I realized that a pigeon was not a vegetable. Strewn between the pansies and the petunias, lay plump pigeon carcasses, the only crop Dad would ever harvest.

This opening line could also work as a voice over for a movie. If you've ever seen the minor classic, A Christmas Movie, (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0085334/) then you'll understand what I mean. If you haven't seen this hysterical movie, then rush out to rent it.

I'm also thinking that these opening novel lines could work as part of the novel structure. The story is about an aspiring novelist who can't get past the opening lines of the novel that he wants to write. Each opening line serves as the intro to a chapter and each chapter chronicles the aspiring novelist's struggle to achieve his life's mission and write that book. The only problem is that Life and Fate keep getting in the way.
